“Aerial Fitness…what can I say other than it was love at first climb!”
As a Group Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer, I’ve practiced and experienced many different workout formats, yet none compete with the unique nature and skills required for Aerial Fitness. After my first Aerial Skills session at the Athletic Club for Women in Newport Beach, I was instantly obsessed. It was an exhilarating, liberating, breath-taking (literally), challenging, and matchless experience. My trainer and instructor, Doug Schulein, created a confident, comfortable and fun atmosphere while providing clear instructions that were easy to follow.
I remember the first time I ever saw someone performing on the silks. I was mesmerized and was certain the performer had been doing these tricks straight from her momma’s womb. Now, having completed only a few sessions, I am performing skills and drops that I never fathomed my body having the ability to do. I live to motivate, encourage and inspire others, so it’s been especially fun to share my experiences with those who know me as a competitive athlete and those that I share my passion for an intense workout with. Aerial Fitness is so distinct from anything else. I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and that all of life’s events are building blocks to becoming the person you strive to define yourself as. I definitely feel that my years of athletics and passion for fitness have prepped me for a long-term relationship with Aerial Fitness.
I will say, to anyone who thinks that Aerial Fitness is beyond their abilities, who thinks it’s too tough, and especially those who simply think they can’t, you need to know that you can and you will! Life is too short and Aerial Fitness is too amazing to let fear or doubt prevent you from learning how to fly, climb, drop and discover what could be your new zest for life!”
I’ve been taking the Aerial Arts class at Athletic Club for Women for about a month now and what a positive addition it’s been to my weekly workout routine! Along with being one of the most challenging activities I’ve ever pursued, it’s been one of the most rewarding too. The atmosphere is very comfortable, clean and safe and the instructors are very personable and eager to assist you in reaching your Aerial/Fitness goals. I absolutely LOVE it!!
Doug – you are the best!!! My daughter and I went to the back bay location last night for our first aerial fitness class. What a great time we had. Who would have thought a 59 year old grandmother like me could try it and my daughter looked beautiful as she climbed to the to with ease on her first night! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! We will see you next week and we are telling all of our friends and a few people we meet on the street.
This class is fun, exotic, challenging, and just plain different! Doug is amazingly patient, enthusiastic and supportive. I always feel 100% safe. I’ve taken this class with different friends who are at different physical levels and he is great with all of them. Great workout for the whole body, especially arms and core. Improves your flexibility too. Builds your confidence and challenges your body and mind. Great idea for a date, a work teambuilding exercise, or with friends. I love to take pictures at class to share and everyone gets a kick out of em. I highly recommend this class and Doug as an instructor!
If you are as burnt out on traditional workouts as I am, then Aerial Fitness is for you!!! I had been going to the gym 3X a week with or without a trainer for the last 5 years and if I had to do one more predictable workout I was going to scream. In all that time, as much weight as I lost and strength that I gained it was nothing like what I have accomplished with Aerial Fitness. I could never even do one pull-up before and now not only can I climb the silk l can stay up there forever.
With Aerial Fitness there is no mindless pumping of weights, zoning out on a treadmill, or some meat-head yelling at you to give ’em one more. There is only excited focus. Focus to make your whole body work for you at once, not just your legs, not just your abs or arms, but all together as one. Focus to get out of your head when you’re 15 feet up in the air and have the confidence in your body to hold yourself upside down then drop and catch yourself again. EXCITING right???
I’m SO happy I found Aerial Fitness OC because without Doug, and Bella I would be sitting on the couch making every excuse to not go to the gym. And because of them I’m bound and determined to be the Rock Star of the Silks!!
Doug Schlein and the rest of the staff at Aerial Fitness Orange County (and Athletic Club for Women) are amazing! I have always wanted to try working with silks, and Doug has made it fun and comfortable. I am so surprised by how quickly I am improving, and love doing something different to stay in shape. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
I absolutely love silks!! It’s not only a great workout but there’s instant gratification when within the first hour you’re already doing tricks! Doug Schulein is a great instructor with fun energy. I just wish I didn’t live 3 hours away because I’d be there everyday if I could!
Cannot believe the fun!! And what a rush to be able to climb the silks, do inverted splits, etc…..looking forward to learning more tricks!!
If it wasn’t for Doug Schulein (owner), I never would have thought I could do it…except that he is very patient, explains things well, and then challenges you with this wicked little grin….!!
Haha!! It worked, Doug, I am hooked! I am coming back for more!!

“Have you been on the trapeze in your gym? No? Well that question may not seem odd in the not too distant future, thanks to visionary Doug Schulein of Costa Mesa. A year ago, Schulein introduced Aerial Fitness Orange County which offers classes in silks, lyra loop (hoop) and trapeze…”

“And it was fun trying, which is the point to a class like this – fitness that doesn’t feel like a forced routine of torture. Instead, it feels like something totally out of the ordinary and daring (that just happens to be a great workout at the same time).”

“When was the last time you hung upside down like a child — and laughed like one?
That’s the question Doug Schulein poses to those curious enough to ask about what it’s like to try aerial arts — those gravity-defying acts of grace and strength involving equipment such as hoops and long bands of heavy fabric…”
